Makeup water replaces blow down and dilutes the remaining boiler water. Blow down is performed two ways; bottom blow down and surface blow down. Ideally, blow down should be done in proportion with steam production.
Water-tube boilers tend to be higher rated, perhaps over 1 000 tonnes/h of steam. This means that even a small percentage blowdown can represent a high mass to be blown down. Start by opening the knife valve, then open and close the gate valve. This should be done to both back and front valves if the boiler comes equipped.
Bottom blowdown involves periodically opening valves in the mud drum to allow boiler pressure to force accumulated sludge out of the boiler. Similar blowdown connections at the bottom of water wall headers are blown down less frequently. Several short blowdown events remove sludge more effectively than a single continuous blowdown.

Bottom blowdown is the removal of the sludge which accumulates in the bottom of a firetube boiler, or in the mud drum of a watertube boiler.
